Airport Security Tips

Expert advice to help you breeze through airport security screening — whether you're a first-time flyer or a seasoned traveller.

Why Airport Security Takes So Long

Airport security screening is essential for flight safety, but it's also the biggest bottleneck for most travellers. Standard security queues can take 15–45 minutes depending on the airport, time of day, and season. Understanding the process and preparing properly can save you significant time.

Packing Tips for Faster Screening

  • Liquids rule — All liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 100ml or less, placed in a single clear resealable bag (max 1 litre). One bag per person.
  • Electronics — Laptops and large electronics must be removed from your bag and placed in a separate tray. Some newer airports with CT scanners may not require this.
  • Medications — Prescription medications are exempt from the liquids rule but should be clearly labelled. Carry a doctor's letter for controlled substances.
  • Baby items — Baby food, milk, and sterilised water are exempt from the 100ml rule but may be tested at the checkpoint.
  • Duty-free — Liquids purchased airside (after security) can be carried in your hand luggage, provided they remain in the sealed security bag with the receipt visible.

What to Wear to Speed Up Security

  • Wear slip-on shoes — You'll likely need to remove your shoes. Slip-ons save time vs lace-up boots.
  • Minimise metal — Remove watches, heavy jewellery, and belts before reaching the front of the queue.
  • Avoid bulky layers — Coats and jackets must be removed and placed in a tray. Wear them over your arm.
  • Empty your pockets — Keys, coins, phone, wallet — everything goes in the tray. Empty pockets before you reach the scanner.

Prohibited Items — What You Cannot Bring

The following items are never allowed through airport security in hand luggage:

  • Sharp objects (knives, scissors with blades over 6cm, razor blades)
  • Firearms and ammunition (including replicas)
  • Explosives and flammable items (fireworks, lighter fuel)
  • Tools (screwdrivers, spanners, wrenches over 7cm)
  • Blunt instruments (bats, clubs)
  • Chemical or toxic substances

Check your airport's specific restrictions before packing. Some airports have additional local rules.
